Several things need to be taken into account when deciding what size self storage unit you will need. 

  • If you will not need to access your belongings after they have been put into storage you should plan to pack the storage unit slowly and carefully.  Pack it to the ceiling, make sure all boxes have lids on them so they can be stacked, roll up items like small floor rugs and place on bookcase shelves etc.  You will be amazed how much you can fit into a small space when you pack precisely, and if you are planning to store long term this can create huge savings.
  • If you think you will require access to your goods while they are in storage you may decide on a layout that will assist you to locate the things you need, e.g. allow space for a “walkway” through the center of the unit, place goods which will likely be needed closest to the door, mark boxes which contain items you will need very clearly.

 

The best way to calculate how many cubic meters of self storage space you will need is to telephone us and we will assist you to calculate this accurately using a computer programme we have set up specifically.  Space required will also depend on whether you are a collector of goods (that’s a nice way of saying “hoarder”) or if you have had a big sort out of what you want to keep and disposed of unwanted excess.  Many people store some of their belongings while leaving other items with family and friends and can therefore fit into a smaller self storage unit.  Below is a general guide for complete house lots of furniture and does not include outdoor furniture or contents of a garage.

2 bedroom house – 12 - 14 cubic meters

3 bedroom house – 22 to 30 cubic meters

4 bedroom house – 30 to 35 cubic meters
